Personal Statement:

What changes in environmental laws would you support to provide more protection for the health and well being of West Virginians?
I support environmental laws that improve processes to minimize pollution, reducing negative environmental impacts and the curbing of greenhouse gas emissions and requiring replacement of petroleum with clean coal technology. Reducing US dependence on imported oil and conserving energy resources would promote the development of new sustainable businesses and jobs.
What should the Legislature do to assure that affordable health care and prescription drug coverage is available for all West Virginians?
I agree with the positions set forth by West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare and would support opportunities to improve and expand our county school system initiatives to improve student health and wellness, health care options focusing on worksite wellness and efforts to expand the rural health care clinic system.
REPLY IN FEWER THAN 50 WORDS: What do you think the Legislature can do to improve work force development?
West Virginia has much to gain from building intellectual capital to strengthen our universities most promising research departments hopefully leading to job creation and other business spin offs. By improving scientific and technological expertise, our workforce can become a driving force to compete successfully in the new world economy.
REPLY IN FEWER THAN 50 WORDS: Many West Virginia cities are struggling with their long-term municipal pension obligations. What do you think the state should do to help cities deal with municipal pensions?
Selecting a single qualified actuary by the State Treasurer through the competitive bid process should make for more consistent reporting and providing better management of pension contributions by the Investment Management Board would improve earnings and lessen the burden on the public.
IN FEWER THAN 50 WORDS: Students in West Virginia generally lag behind other countries in education. Do you favor more instruction days, adding merit pay for teachers, improving math and science instruction or some other option to improve education?
Having highly qualified teachers is essential to student success. Work towards teachers making the best use of their skills by teaching subjects they are certified to instruct. The best and brightest students should be encouraged to begin teaching professions without sacrificing pay cuts when compared to other career choices.
