Personal Statement:
- What guidelines should be established concerning how monies received by the state from the settlement of legal action are spent?
- All settlement monies should be returned to the state and appropriated through the legislative process. If a specific agency sustained the loss the money should be returned to that agency. The practice of the Attorney General distributing these funds at his discretion must be stopped.
- What more do you think should be done to oversee non-governmental agencies that receive and administer large amounts of tax dollars to prevent abuses?
- The legislative auditors office should be given broad authority to audit all such agencies. The Attorney General's office could also be given authority to investigate and file actions to protect state money. Legislative confidence in the Attorney General's office would have to be restored to obtain such authority.
- What changes would you like to implement in the Attorney General’s Office?
- I will enforce consumer protection without creating a negative business climate. I will end the practice of directing how settlements are to be spent and will turn over all proceeds to the legislature for appropriation. I will institute competitive bids for hiring attorneys outside the AG’s office to end the system of political payback currently in place. I will end the use of trinkets and similar items to promote the officeholder. I will represent the state of West Virginia instead of trying to impose my own political agenda.
