Personal Statement:
- What action must the federal government take to assure high quality health care is available to all Americans?
- Two out of every three uninsured children in the U.S. are eligible for health care coverage, but remain uninsured. Programs like SCHIP play a vital role providing healthcare for those most in need. Rest assured, I will continue to fight for reauthorization of SCHIP and quality healthcare for all Americans.
- What programs would you cut or what additional revenue sources would you tap to bring the federal budget into balance?
- Ending the war, some estimates suggest, would save us as much as $12 billion a month. While a significant share of that could go to deficit reduction, a lion’s share could be invested in our people and our national infrastructure. Investments would yield considerable revenues to our future development.
- What if anything should the federal government do to address our nation’s energy issues?
- We must provide the resources to transition away from an overdependence on foreign oil. We must increase our use of renewables and our drilling for domestic oil, while developing technologies that expand our wise use of other abundant American resources, like coal, in more environmentally sound ways.
- How will you balance the continuing costs of military action with the costs of domestic needs?
- While ending the war could save as much as $12 billion a month, making sure that funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is spent wisely and kept in check enables us to re-direct funds to vital domestic programs such as health care, law enforcement and our national infrastructure.
- What should be done, if anything, to help young Americans, especially young West Virginians achieve greater financial security?
- To achieve financial security, we must ensure that Americans have greater access to a college education. We must ensure the continued access to student loans and other forms of financial aid to help make it easier for students to attend college even in the face of an economic crisis.
