Personal Statement:
- How will you balance the continuing costs of military action with the costs of domestic needs?
- We must remain committed to providing our troops the resources, including body armor, they need. Congress must also invest in producing domestic energy, roads and bridges and access to quality health care. This is why I voted to increase funding for S-CHIP – the children’s health insurance program.
- What should be done, if anything, to help young Americans, especially young West Virginians achieve greater financial security?
- I am committed to standing with young people so they succeed. This is why I support investing in student loan programs, providing capital for homeownership and keeping taxes low. The best thing Congress can do is to continue tax relief that will stimulate the economy and create quality jobs.
- What if anything should the federal government do to address our nation’s energy issues?
- America spends $700 billion a year on foreign oil. We must become energy independent by drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf and using the revenues from these leases to invest in alternative fuels, clean coal and emphasize conservation. We must also use West Virginia’s resource, COAL, as an alternative fuel.
- What action must the federal government take to assure high quality health care is available to all Americans?
- The best way to provide health insurance to the uninsured is to offer choices. Both Health Savings Accounts and Small Business Plans offer health care to more Americans, while continuing America's great tradition of the highest quality care and medical innovation in the world.
- What programs would you cut or what additional revenue sources would you tap to bring the federal budget into balance?
- We must control spending now. I support a constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget. This proposal, H. J. Resolution 1, would allow Congress to waive this provision for emergency items by a three-fifths vote. We do not want to place the burden of our debt on our children.
